Over the Rainbow Bridge

Romeo, 2006-2021

I got Romeo in November 2008 during my senior year of college. I was looking for a running buddy, and my mom found him roaming her suburban neighborhood. When nobody claimed him, my parents suggested I take him in. I absolutely did not want a Lab, but I hated even more the thought of sending him to a shelter where he'd probably be looked over for being a big dog.

In the beginning, Romeo had no manners and was terrified to go into the house. But, old habits died easily, in his case. He tried so hard to be a good boy, though he was always a goober and never learned the meaning of "personal space." He became an AKC Canine Good Citizen, he was the kindest big brother to my many other animals, and he was my faithful protector. As far as being a Lab, he didn't retrieve, he hated water and he never did make a good running buddy -- he preferred to trail behind me -- but he was the right Lab for me.

We laid Romeo to rest at a pet cemetery outside Fort Worth where we can visit him regularly. His loss has left a giant hole in my heart.
