Athena

2009 DLH

I first saw Athena, called "Molly" at the time, online while browsing a local Fort Worth rescue in 2016. She and her kittens were actually the ones that started the rescue, and she had been there since 2015. I fell in love with her photo, but as we weren't looking to add another cat to our family, all I could do was watch from afar to see if she was adopted.

Athena was adopted a few times over the years, but she was always returned in less than a week. She was so terrified of new people that she would just hide, and nobody had the patience to work with her. She was moved back and forth between the rescue's locations in Fort Worth and Houston and never seemed to find the right home to land.

Three years later, we finally decided to get a second cat. Athena happened to be in Fort Worth, though she was scheduled to go to Houston later in the week. I quickly went and met her at Petsmart one evening, and she was so scared, she was just hiding under a towel in her cage. When I picked her up, she shook in my arms. Though I hadn't cleared it with Philip, I couldn't leave her, so I brought her home (better to ask forgiveness than permission, amiright?). She spent the first month hiding in our guest bathroom.

Slowly but surely, Athena started making her way out of the bathroom as she got more comfortable with us, and today, she's a completely different cat. She's always in our laps or laying across our laptops, enjoys making appearances on Zoom calls, and she sleeps up against me at night. It's amazing how much her personality changed from the frightened girl she once was.
